Figurative artist
Dirk Bal (b. 1964, Rotterdam) is a figurative artist from Limburg who found his creative path through a deep exploration of a wide range of styles and disciplines. After a long search, he made a deliberate choice for realism — a choice that anchored stillness, quiet and balance in both his life and his work.
His work is defined by two central themes: the still life and the human figure, often combined in harmonious compositions. Through careful lighting, subtle use of colour and an everyday simplicity, his work evokes a serene, almost timeless atmosphere.
Alongside his paintings, he creates bronze sculptures — mainly female figures in ballet-like poses that seem to freeze a moment of graceful balance in time. Dirk is also versatile as an artist: he paints portraits in a range of styles and techniques.
Bal spends most of his time painting. His still lifes are carefully constructed: he composes the arrangements himself using objects — often pottery and everyday items from his own collection — working from the idea of balance and stillness. Light is always a structural element; backgrounds stay understated, so that all attention goes to the subject, skin and material.
He works extensively in oil on panel (masonite). This choice supports his precision: a rigid, dimensionally stable support allows for fine brushwork and glazing layers without the "give" of canvas. The build-up is classical — a sober, toned ground, over which thin and dense layers alternate to make texture and light convincing.
Alongside his paintings, Bal makes bronze sculptures. For the casting he works with professional bronze foundries. The finish ranges from warm, dark patinas to subtle colour accents that emphasise movement and line.
Bal is represented by galleries that actively champion realism, including Galerie Maaslands in Maastricht. His work is described there as a synthesis of classical craftsmanship with a contemporary, clear signature — with stillness, balance and light as constant threads.
